Bio

Babek Aliassa is a producer, screenwriter, and director. After studying architecture and film in Paris, he settles in Toronto, where he directs a short film, The Faisan, two documentaries, Transplant and Spheres, and a video essay, Children of Belarus. Alongside his work as a filmmaker, he founds Le Labo, an art center for francophone visual and media artists that quickly becomes an essential hub for creating and training in French Canada. He then moves to Montreal to produce and direct his first feature film, Halal Butcher Shop. The theme of immigration has always been central to Babek’s work, having emigrated five times in his life, from France to Iran and from English Canada to Belarus before settling in Quebec. Bassima’s Womb is his second feature film.
