Maissa Houri – Bio
Maissa Houri is an Arab-Canadian award-winning filmmaker and actress based out of Ottawa, Canada, who attended Montreal’s Vanier College Theatre and Film Program. Maissa co-founded the Eve Film Festival in which she is also the Director of Industry Events. Maissa recently released an award-winning web series that challenged the norms of society by telling the story of a sexually freed Muslim woman living with her gay roommate. Her second short film “Inara” has warranted her many directing awards. Maissa is passionate about telling stories from the perspective of being a first-generation Arab-Canadian and shedding light on the misrepresentations of Arabs and Muslims on TV and film.

Hi, my name is Maissa. I’m a filmmaker and actor. I am half Lebanese, half Syrian. Born in Montreal but have grown up in Ottawa where I currently reside.
I love developing my own content because I get to tell a story from my perspective. Growing up, there weren’t any Arabs on tv and I would like to change that and would also like to break the stereotype they have casted on us.
I am always learning and looking to shadow someone or get mentored.
I am a huge advocate for women in film. Would love to see more opportunities for women especially women of colour.
