Bio

Pia Perez is Peruvian-Argentinian-Canadian filmmaker, based in Toronto. Her works embodies a desire to approach the telling of cinematic stories via alternate/new modes of production, in order to harbor healthier and more diverse sets/visual representations.

As a Director/Producer, Pia creates work for the music video, narrative, and documentary formats. She specializes in projects shooting on celluloid film, and  has worked on a diverse array of international projects that have been featured on both the Pitchfork and The Fader. In 2020, with her creative filmmaking production house ‘tranquilo’ (tranquilotoronto.com, previously of ¡FUEGO!), she was the recipient of Prism Prize’s Lipsett Award; as a Canadian music video artist with an innovative approach to music video art. Her work with tranquilo celebrates the visual qualities inherent to the celluloid film image, while exploring the aesthetic possibilities of the film medium itself. A finely honed practice devoted to analog film processes, allows ‘tranquilo’ to utilize film stocks and processing techniques to achieve a unique style in this work. tranquilo, along with a vibrant crew of impassioned and valued collaborators, all work to push the boundaries of artistic expression within the commercial realm to create honest, collaborative and inclusive images. They have worked with a diverse array of international artists, and their combined body of work has received millions of streams online.

As a Production Designer, she is inspired by the stories that spaces can tell, and interested in how space and object enrich visual storytelling; believing that visual stories can only be as strong as the design behind them. Pia’s work includes a wide array of both commercial and narrative productions; designing for the Women’s Network (2018), as well as having worked as a part of the team on Patricia Rozema’s cinematic interpretation of ‘Mouthpeice‘ (2018).  She is thrilled to have had the chance to work on ‘Deer On A Plain’ (TIFF, 2019) with a mostly female leading team, and looks forward to continuing to work alongside other female creators in telling underrepresented female stories.
