Bio
Tara Hakim is a Jordanian born multidisciplinary artist and filmmaker based in Toronto whose practice engages with intercultural existences, love and the inner landscapes of human beings and mental health. Tara strives to offer unique ways of interacting, interpreting, and responding to the world around her. Her work can be considered as an experimental and playful meditation on the everyday, the private and the dis-regarded details of our lives. Tara completed her BA (Hons.) in Media & Cultural Studies at Kingston University and holds an MFA degree in Documentary Media from Ryerson University. Her first film ‘Teta, Opi & Me’, has screened at over 10 festivals worldwide, and recently won the Best Documentary and Audience Choice at Zurich Mobile Film Festival. When Tara is not making her own work, she delves into and across the creative world through various positions. During her studies, she took the role of Digital Cinematographer & Sound Recordist for the short film Menaptwi (smoked), by Natasha Naveau and was constantly involved in the film world via workshops, talks and open calls.
Intro
Since graduating from Ryerson, Tara has ambitiously expanded her involvement in the art and film world via undertaking a number of part time endeavours and challenges. She is a contributing writer with POV magazine, a volunteer with TSV and recently was the Social Media Coordinator/Wesbite Developer for the 20th imagineNATIVE Festival. On the side, Tara took the role of the Meanwhile, she.recently completed her second short film ‘Tender Moist’, an experiential, sensual and short intimate love note woven from archival footage and poetic visual vignettes told from the point of view of a woman who is navigating what she experiences as ‘restricted gayness’, which she made as one of the 5 directors chosen for the micro cinema challenge hosted by CineFam.
On the other side, Tara is currently developing a body of work called ‘Courage in Crazy’ to be part of a group show to exhibit in Toronto as part of the Scotiabank Contact Festival in May. She hopes to begin a residency in February with Modzi Art in Lusaka, Zambia to further develop and complete the work. In March, Tara plans to return to Toronto to focus on, develop and grow in the field of film and specifically in the realm of video editing. She is ambitious, has a strong work ethic and is seeking to thrive as an Arab Bisexual Female Artists/Filmmaker in Toronto.
Currently, Tara seeks to plunge into the world of film production and aspires to achieve success in the world of Editing and Direction. She hopes to gain valuable experience learning from and working with other artists, filmmakers and creators.
